During his descent, he thought to himself that nothing is impossible therefore he must be falling into something. He then suggested to himself that perhaps if he fell through so many metres of different dimensions with dimensional portals punctuating each stretch, he could go on forever. He gulped at this before reasoning that he had nothing to lose, so he started humming to himself, trying to remember something.
Suddenly he thought he heard a voice, a female voice, "Daniel! Daniel!"
He looked around himself, but finding nothing, just as he expected, he put it down to auditory hallucinations. Then he felt as if he was being zatted and he closed his eyes in pain.
When he opened his eyes, he was back in his own bed, and he wasn't alone. Standing over him was someone he didn't recognise. He peered up at the female stranger, his sleep inertia still active, and he asked, "Who are you?," but as soon as the words left his lips, she vanished into thin air. He scratched his head in puzzlement before falling asleep again.
He awoke some time later to the intrusive sound of his door buzzer.
He swore in colourful Egyptian, before making his way albeit bleary-eyed to the door. He was still in his boxers, but reasoned that perhaps it was just his neighbour campaigning for the local 'Save the Dromedaries' society again.
He opened the door to find O'Neill and a very surprised Carter looking back at him.
Daniel blushed and O'Neill remarked, "Is it dress-down day already?! I thought that was next week!"
Carter mentally shook herself and stopped staring at her fellow academic's taut, muscular body long enough to say, "Daniel, you missed the early morning mission to P3X-010. Is everything alright?"
Daniel cringed and said as he rubbed his eyes, "I overslept again. Damn! Um, give me a sec. Come in."
The two Air Force officers followed their civilian colleague indoors; he hurried off in the direction of his bedroom, as they sat in his lounge.
O'Neill remarked, "Not like ol' Doc Jackson to oversleep and miss missions. That guy is as meticulous as... well, himself."
Carter seemed to be in a daze, and he snapped as he nudged her, "Hey Carter, snap out of it! Tempting as he may be, it's Daniel."
Carter blushed and composed herself, just as Daniel emerged freshly showered, shaved and fully dressed.
The gorgeous Archaeologist asked, "Anyone for coffee?"
O'Neill said, "Daniel, Hammond wants you in his office in ten minutes otherwise he promises he'll replace us with Teal’c, and y'know our tall and silent friend can't take a joke."
The three of them arrived at Cheyenne Mountain, where Daniel was escorted to Hammond's office.
The marble-crowned one asked him, as he sat down, "Doctor Jackson, is anything the matter? You have missed four early off-world missions this week where your academic expertise was required. Have you been working too much? I want you to visit Doctor Fraiser as soon as you leave this office - SG-1 cannot function properly without you, as the team makes first contact with alien civilisations."
Daniel removed his glasses, closed his eyes and pinched the top of his nose, before saying, "General, if you must know, I've been having disturbing dreams."
"How so?"
"I'm falling continuously and then I hear someone calling my name. Suddenly it feels as if I've been zatted and then I wake up to find a woman bending over my bed. She disappears soon afterwards."
"Son, go and see Doctor Fraiser - this is a serious matter."
After a number of tests, SG-1 sat with Fraiser and Hammond at the briefing table.
Fraiser was reporting her findings, "It seems that Doctor Jackson's brain chemistry has been altered. From the initial scans, the changes have occurred over the past week but the rate of change is astounding. It is as if he is evolving somehow, specifically at the back of the brain in the 'dream centre'. I would like to perform more tests if possible so as to ascertain the cause of this."
Carter asked, "What do these changes mean, in general?"
"Doctor Jackson shouldn't be here - the rate of change and the changes itself are not humanly possible. General, where was SG-1 around four days ago?"
Hammond replied, "Why, they were on P5C-332, the planet where Nirrti's beta lab was discovered."
O'Neill remarked with a grim expression, "That ol' witch is up to something."
Fraiser replied, "Indeed, sir. Nirrti has a history of experimenting on her subjects, so what if she has discovered a way to alter brain chemistry? By all our medical science, this man shouldn't be alive."
While O'Neill, Teal’c, SG-2 and SG-5 returned to P5C-332 with a scientist team, Fraiser allowed Daniel out of the Infirmary on the strict understanding that Carter report any physiological or psychological change immediately.
Daniel went to his office where he proceeded to work through the backlog of work he had missed, and Carter watched over him, talking all the while:
Carter said with a smile, "Y'know Siler and Robertson are seeing each other?"
"Get out, I thought he was seeing Davies/Harriman. What's the deal with the two surnames?"
"Oh yeah... he has an on-off relationship with each of his parents - his Mom's a Harriman and his Pop's a Davies."
"Jeez, politics or what?!"
"Yeah... so, what's that you're doing?"
"Oh, um, translating that tablet we found on P9C-244. It's in Mayan, which suggests that the Mayan civilisation is extraterrestrial. This opens up so many doors into the culture and explains their art and architecture."
"Wow."
O'Neill and his party returned with many albeit minor casualties.
He reported to Hammond at the bottom of the ramp, after the medical team had been summoned, "Sir, we were ambushed by Nirrti's Jaffa when we left the lab, but we did find some very important information."
"Ok Colonel, briefing in one hour. Well done."
At the subsequent briefing, the head of the scientist team presented her findings, "We found chemical compounds that seem to react to a certain blood type. Colonel O'Neill is of type O, while Doctor Jackson, Major Carter and Teal’c are all A Positive. However, the chemical compounds are hindered by the Naquadah in the latter two's blood, leaving Doctor Jackson as the odd one out. Doctor McGregor rummaged about in Nirrti's computer system and discovered that the experiment on Doctor Jackson was carried out to test out a new weapon based on blood control."
Fraiser interjected, "Some blood control; not everyone is A Positive."
O'Connor continued, "If I'm not mistaken, one third of Earth, that's two billion people, are A Positive. That's enough of a threat to security."
Carter asked, "Blood control aside, why do they want to give Daniel weird dreams?"
O'Connor continued again, "Apparently something went wrong - Doctor Jackson was meant to succumb to the compounds so as to reveal the secrets he carries. However, the compounds have a tendency to produce vivid dreams and auditory-visual hallucinatory phenomena. In other words, Nirrti failed."
Hammond asked, "What now? What do we do?"
O'Connor said, "We discovered a way to neutralise the compounds, but Doctor Jackson has to be placed in a chemical coma for this to work."
O'Neill raised an eyebrow and remarked, "Putting him to sleep?"
Daniel, hooked up to more machines than there are deadly sins, laid comatose in the infirmary with his team-mates, McGregor and O'Connor watching over him.
Fraiser pointed to one of the screens and told Carter, "See Sam, the dream centre is lighting up again. This isn't supposed to happen."
Teal’c piped up, "DoctorFraiser, could Nirrti's research notes have been falsified?"
McGregor interjected, "Nae offence Teal’c, but why would she do a thing like that? We took a bashing out there - if it was fake, they wouldn't have so adamant to thrash us. However, I do think we missed something."
O'Neill, with his "I'm not getting this" look, said in reply to Fraiser's observation, "Hey Doc, in English!"
Fraiser replied, "Sir, he's dreaming."
Daniel was falling again but this time he saw the woman who usually bent over his bed. He asked her, "Who are you?"
She replied, "I am Adrianna and come to you in peace."
"What about Nirrti?"
"I have been assigned by Oma DeSala to watch over you. Oma knows what Nirrti did so she lessened the impact, but Oma cannot appear to you for fear of the others."
"Oh, um, ok... makes sense."
"Tell me off the Tok'ra."
"The Tok'ra? Why?"
"I wish to learn of them. Where is their secret base?"
"No... you're not of the Ancients."
She burst into flames and morphed into a demon as she screamed, "You will tell me the Tok'ra's base! Bow before your god!"
Daniel rolled his eyes and said with a smile, "You're forgetting one little thing, crazy lady, this is my dream and as long as I'm fully aware of it being a dream, I can control my surroundings. Go to hell!"
'Adrianna' howled in pain as she exploded into white flames.
He chuckled to himself and said, "It takes a lot more than intimidation to get to this ol' Archaeologist. So, back to what I usually dream about!"
Suddenly, Carter appeared before him and he smiled.
He said to her, "Sam, I won't get away with saying this when I wake up, so here goes... I love you."
The Carter of his mind enveloped him in a huge hug, before asking in a husky voice, "Do you love me enough to tell me where the Tok'ra base is? If you do, I'll make it worth your while."
Daniel cocked an eyebrow and shouted, "Adrianna! Leave me alone!"
Carter changed into Adrianna again and howled at him.
He speculated, "Could this be in fact a Succubus?," before Adrianna compressed his chest with an intensity that would have killed a normal person, but Doctor Daniel Jackson was far from normal.
He fought her, the same way he would, in the future, encourage Oma to do with Anubis.
Back in reality, Daniel had gone into Cardiac arrest, and Fraiser and her team were busy resuscitating the eminent Archaeological Linguist.
Before Fraiser could apply the defibrillator paddles to his chest, his vital signs returned to normal.
Carter noted as she looked at a monitor, "Wow, Janet, his brain chemistry has significantly altered. Look, you can see a pattern emerging."
Fraiser peered at the monitor and exclaimed, "It's returning to normal levels and patterns at four times the previous rate. It's like he's fighting it in there."
O'Neill remarked, "That's our Dannyboy, ever fighting."
An hour later, a certain Archaeologist opened his beautiful blue eyes and took in the blurred ceiling of the Infirmary.
He murmured, "I won," before slipping back into unconsciousness again.
Carter and O'Neill sat by his bed, as stoic and silent Teal’c stood guard at the foot of the bed.
O'Neill asked, "What d'ya think he meant?"
Carter replied, "He could have been fighting something in his dream."
Teal’c added, "The Goa'uld do indeed have dream technology as evidenced by what Osiris did to DanielJackson."
Carter ran her hands through her hair and exclaimed, "Why does it all happen to Daniel? Is it not enough that he's lost his wife and his in-laws that he has to have so much other bad stuff happening to him? What did he ever do?"
When Teal’c left for his kel-no-reem session and when Fraiser and the gossiping Nurses were out of earshot, O'Neill leaned over Daniel and whispered to Carter, "I know you have feelings for Dannyboy."
Carter blushed profusely and exclaimed, "Sir!"
"Hey, it's true. It's the patented O'Neill instinct, and I think I can say that Dannyboy likes you too. It was so damn funny this morning when you practically gawped at his boxered self."
"Sir!"
"Carter, despite what I say about Daniel, he's a great guy. You guys would be just peachy together, and think of the kids... huge brains the size of..."
"Sir!"
"What? I'm just saying!"
Daniel murmured, "Adrianna," and O'Neill remarked, "Carter, you changed your name?"
The next day, Fraiser was addressing all of SG-1 and Hammond of her findings, "So, the chemical reactions of the compound manifested the dreams, and the auditory and visual hallucinatory phenomena. It provided some kind of link to Nirrti and she was trying to find out the location of the Tok'ra. This is way out of my scientific experience, but Daniel triggered a response in himself that was manifested when he fought this Adrianna person in his dream."
After the briefing, the academics went their separate ways, but O'Neill would have none of it.
He told Carter, "Hey, Hammond wants you to go to the locker-room."
"Me? Why?"
"Some top secret doo-dah; he thinks his office and the corridors are bugged."
He then went to Daniel's office and said, "Fraiser wants you in the locker-room; she has something to tell you."
"What?! Jack, I just came from the Infirmary!"
"Well, y'know these crazy medical doctors - she thinks her office is bugged."
"What's going on?"
"Nothing... you don't wanna argue with an MD - that woman has needles the size of trees in her 'Grotto of Doom'."
The two PhDs entered the locker-room, and before they could say anything, O'Neill locked the door from the outside.
Both Carter and Daniel banged on the door and shouted at the AF Colonel to open the door.
They eventually gave up, and Carter exclaimed, "I can't believe I fell for his lie about Hammond thinking his office is bugged! Argh!"
Daniel chuckled and said, "He told me that Janet wanted to see me 'cos her office is bugged. Look's like we're here for the long term. Wanna negotiate with him, or shall I?"
He called through the door in a coaxing voice, "Jack, come on, let us out. What do you want?"
O'Neill called back, "You know damn well!"
Carter blushed profusely as Daniel turned around with a quizzical look on his face. He asked her, "You know what this is about, don't you?!"
A good five minutes later, Carter finally admitted her feelings for Daniel, "Daniel, he found out that I have feelings for you. He was teasing me while you were out for the count."
Daniel wandered around the room, running his fingers through his hair, and he said, "You what?! Why me?"
Carter shook her head, secretly disappointed, and she said, trying to feign cheeriness, "Never mind, it's just me being stupid. I like you Daniel, but I couldn't do that to you."
He raised his eyebrows and said, feigning non-chalance, "That's a shame. I have feelings for you too, ever since we first met."
She couldn't believe what she was hearing, "What?!"
He approached her and said with a smile, "It's true. I love you."
She broke into a grin and exclaimed, "You don't know how long I've been waiting for something like this! I love you too!"
He was about to gently caress her cheek, but she deftly pulled his glasses off, and claimed his lips for her own, in the mother, father and grandparents of all kisses (yah boo sucks to you, Princess Bride!), taking his breath away.
As they settled into the kiss and their arms wrapped around each other's bodies, the door swung open to reveal a smug looking O'Neill, Teal’c and half of the SGC personnel, who promptly began to give the lovebirds a hefty round of applause.
