General Questions

What's with the name 'Stargate Translations'?
It came our of a discussion at the Sam-Daniel-Rebellion. We came to the conclusion that 'translation' must be a code word for... well, use your imagination. So, whenever Sam says she needs Daniel's help with a 'translation' or they're 'working on a translation', you'll probably find them in one of the base's broom closets.

Then there's the fact that Daniel does a lot of translation work and the word also applies to physics, which relates to Sam. The meaning of the word as it relates to physics also describes the way Sam and Daniel are always in sync with each other.

Why do entries have to focus on Sam and Daniel? What about the rest of SG1?
This is a Sam and Daniel archive, as such it is dedicated to these two characters. While the stories have to focus on them, there is no reason not to include the other characters as well.
Are these archives only for Sam/Daniel 'shippers?
Of course not. This is for anyone who enjoys the interaction between Sam and Daniel. While the creators of the archive are Sam/Daniel 'shippers, we realize that not everyone is and that many people see Sam and Daniel as having a 'sibling-like' relationship. For this reason, we encourage people to write and submit SD friendship fics, artwork and music videos.
What's the artwork/music video archive?
We weren't content to simply archive fan fiction, so we've provided a means for artists to list their SD artwork and music videos. This allows people to easily search through the artwork and videos to find exactly what they're looking for. The archives contain links to either the work itself or to the page where the work can be found (depending on which the artist has decided to link to).
What do I do if I find an entry that is not Sam/Daniel related?
Any entries that do not have a major focus on Sam and Daniel do not meet the requirements for the archive. Please notify us of the violation (include the title and author of the entry) at admin@stargatetranslations.com
Do you check the stories to make sure they have the correct ratings and warnings?
Yes. We make every effort to read all stories in the archives to ensure they are rated properly. However, the archivists might not be able to keep up with all new stories, so there’s always a chance that you might run into a mis-rated fic. Unfortunately, this cannot be avoided, but if you find a mis-rated entry, please notify the archivists at admin@stargatetranslations.com Include the story title and author so that we may review the story.
Why do some stories open in a frame on your page?
All stories that were entered as a URL instead of text or HTML open in a frame. We set up the archive to do this as a convenience for the people who don't want to open linked stories in a new browser window. If you want to view the page in a separate window, or if your browser doesn’t support frames, you can click on the link provided in the story's header.
Do the archives only have S/D 'ship entries?
No. Friendship fics, artwork, and videos are also allowed.
What if I have a suggestion for how to improve the archives?
  Send the suggestions to admin@stargatetranslations.com
Why was my story moved from the Fan Fiction archive to the Adult archive?
The archivists have determined that your story had an incorrect rating and is actually NC-17. Since NC-17 fics are only allowed in the Adult archive, it was moved to the proper place. If you believe that your story does not belong in the adult archive, you may contact the archivists at admin@stargatetranslations.com.
Do you list email addresses for authors and artists who submit work?
To prevent our users from receiving spam from having their email listed on the site, we do not post users' email addresses. We do however provide a form to send feedback/comments to authors and artists.
Why is my entry no longer showing up in the archives list?
If your entry originally showed up in the archive, but no longer does, it has either been suspended or removed.
In order to prevent users from having to wade through outdated URLs, the admins will suspend stories or artwork entries that are listed with a URL that produces a 'File Not Found' error. To reactivate an entry that has been suspended, simply edit the URL from the Members' Area.
If your entry is not listed under the entries you are allowed to edit, it has likely been removed by the admins. If you believe it was removed without good cause, please contact admin@stargatetranslations.com.

Ratings Questions

How are the stories rated?
Ratings are based on the warnings author selects when submitting the story. If you disagree with the given rating, contact the archivists at: admin@stargatetranslations.com.

We ask all authors to use the best judgment when selecting warnings. If a story is border-line, it is better for a story to receive a higher rating. This helps ensure that readers do not access content that may offend them.

The ratings are given based on the criteria below.
NC-17: slash, fem-slash, rape, graphic rape, extensive profanity, graphic sex, intense violence, graphic drug use
R: multiple uses of profanity, extensive non-sexual nudity, non-explicit sexual situations, violence, illegal drug use
PG: some profanity, brief non-sexual nudity or implied sexual situations, minimal violence, use of legal drugs (alcohol, etc)
G: no profanity, no nudity, no violence, no drug use

What if I entered the correct warnings for my story, but I still feel the rating is too low (e.g. I would have given it an R rating, but it only received PG)?
We may not have considered all possible criteria, so we ask that you contact the archivists at admin@stargatetranslations.com. Let us know your username and the title of the story you feel received an incorrect rating. Tell us what rating you feel it should have received and any warnings you would like included for the story. We will then manually correct the rating in the archive. You must send the email from the address that is listed on your account. If you don't we will send a confirmation email to the address we have on file before making any changes.
Is NC-17 rated fiction allowed in the Fan Fiction archive?
No. All NC-17 fics are archived in the Adult Archive. Submission for NC-17 fics uses the same for as all other fics. Please choose the proper warnings when submitting so that the story is archived in the Adult Archive. Any NC-17 story found without the proper warnings will be re-rated and moved to the Adult archive.
Is R rated fiction allowed in the archive?
Yes. R rated fanfics are also archived in the Fanfic archive. Please be sure to select the correct warnings when submitting your story.
What do I do if I've just read a story that is mis-rated?
Contact the archivists at admin@stargatetranslations.com; mention the title and the author of the fic and how you feel it has been mis-rated in the e-mail.
Why have the rating and/or warnings on my story changed?
The archivists may have decided that your story does not have the correct rating and/or warnings. They have corrected the story with the rating and warnings that they believe it should have. If you do not agree with the change, contact the archivists at admin@stargatetranslations.com.

Searching the Archives

How do I search the archives?

Click on the search link for the archive you'd like to search. From there, you'll be given different search options. You can use the quick searches (by date, author, title, genre(fic), 'ship type (fic), or category (art/vid)). These will provide you with links at the top of their pages for you to sort the entries. You can also use the Advanced Search method. This will provide you with a form where you can enter keywords and specific search criteria in order to narrow down your results. You can make as many or as few selections from each of the categories as you would like. (Selecting 'All warnings' and 'All pairings' with no other selections will allow you to search all entries by keyword.)

How can I get more search results?
For Fan Fiction and Adult Fan Fiction archive searches:
Choose fewer selections (or choose none) from the following categories: Keywords, Genre, 'Ship Type, Season, Episode, Length Or choose more selections from these categories: Additional Pairings, Warnings

For Artwork/Music Video archive searches:
Choose fewer selections (or choose none) from the following categories: Keywords, Category, Season, Episode Or choose more selections from these categories: Additional Pairings

Submitting to the Archives

Do you accept works in progress?

Yes. When submitting your story, select the check box for WIPs at the bottom of the submission form. The story will be archived with all other stories, but will be labeled as a work in progress. When you have completed the story, simply uncheck the box in the Edit Entry form and the story will no longer be labeled as a work in progress.

What are the guidelines for submission?
The fic must relate to Stargate and focus mainly on the friendship or romantic relationship between the characters Sam Carter and Daniel Jackson. All stories meeting this requirement are accepted, however, the archivists reserve the right to remove any entries which they feel are inappropriate or do not fit in with the overall intent of the site. This action will only be taken under extreme circumstances.
How do I submit my own work?
Register to become a member through the link on the navigation menu to the right side of the page. Once you've registered, you'll receive a confirmation email that will allow you to log in to the Members' Area. From there, click the Add New Entry link in the navigation menu. Select which type of entry you'd like to make, then choose all the applicable categories and press submit.
Can I submit work that doesn't have Sam and Daniel in a romantic relationship?
Yes. However, it must then be deal with their friendship, unrequited romantic feelings on the part of one of the two characters, or it must otherwise focus on Sam and Daniel.
Can I submit my story as a link?
Yes. Just enter the URL into the entry form. The URL entered will open in a frame on the listing page as well as having a link that will allow users to open the story in a new page.
How do I submit a rating for my story?
The stories are rated automatically based on the warnings you select.
Is HTML allowed in my entries?
Yes. Simply add the HTML tags in the text box in the Add Entry form. Only <b> <p> <br> <i> and <u> tags are allowed. All others are automatically removed.
How do I use bold, italic, or underlined text in my story?
Bold: <b> at the beginning of the text that is to be bold, </b> at the end.
Italic: <i> at the beginning, </i> at the end.
Underline: <u> at the beginning, </u> at the end.
Can I edit my entries after I submit them?
Yes. When you’re logged in, click Edit Entry in the Members' Area and follow the same procedure as when you first add an entry.
Is there a limit to how long my story can be?
No. Your story can be as long as you want. However, when submitting a story as text or HTML each chapter of a story has a limit of approximately 200,000 characters. This should be long enough to accommodate most stories while preventing people from making unreasonably long entries. If your fic is longer than this, you must separate it into chapters.
If you submit your story via a URL, it has no character limit.

Artwork/Video Archive Questions

What kind of art is allowed in the archive?

Any type of art is allowed as long as it relates to Sam and Daniel, portraying them in a positive light.

Examples of what could be submitted are:
Skins for programs such as Internet Explorer, RealPlayer, etc.
Music Videos
Desktop Wallpapers
Photo Manipulations
Hand-drawn Pictures
Computer Icons

Should I link to the page where file is listed or link directly to the file?
You can do either. However, if you link to a page, be sure that the file is easy to locate and that the user doesn't have to navigate to any other page to find the file. Please try to make the link to the file or the image appear near the top of the page (use anchors [page jumps] to bring the link to the top if you have to).
How do I upload my artwork/video file?

We don't currently support uploading of files. We only link to them. You can either link directly to the file (which makes it easier for users to find and download) or you can link to a page that contains a direct link to the file. Do not simply link to a main site that users will have to navigate through to be able to find your file.

Where can I get a site to host my artwork/video?

Many different sites offer hosting for your files. Here's a list of good free hosts that also have paid services: Trapeka, Yahoo! Geocities, Tripod

If you need to host music videos, we suggest using Yahoo! Groups. Though occasionally unreliable, they allow you a larger amount of space with larger file sizes that most web site hosts (20Mb space, 5Mb file size limit).

Is there a file size limit?
Since files will be hosted on your own server/host, files list in the archive can be any size.
Is adult content allowed in the artwork/video archives?
No. Any x-rated or pornographic images are not allowed in the archive and will be removed without notification. While there is an Adult Fan Fiction archive, we do not currently have an Adult Art archive. If we receive requests for such an archive, we may consider creating one.

Adult Fan Fiction Archive Questions

Why do I have to close my browser after visiting the adult archive?

This is to prevent accidental access to adult content by persons who are underage or who are offended by adult content.
The adult archive uses sessions (which are similar to cookies, but are non-intrusive because they do not store any data on your computer or collect information about you) to remember your answer when you chose to 'continue' into the Adult Archive. This prevents you from receiving a message for every page that may contain adult material.
The session is stored for as long as the browser is open; until the browser is closed, the warning for the adult archive will no longer appear. This means that persons who are underage or do not wish to view adult content will not be notified that they are accessing adult content.
The session may also be ended by logging out of your user account. If wish to continuing searching the adult archives after logging out of the members' area, you will receive another adult fiction warning.

When you're looking for slash/femslash stories, keep in mind that these types of stories require an additional pairing. You'll need to select which additional pairing you'd like to read or you can choose 'All Pairings' to get all slash/femslash results.

Members Area

How do I cancel when editing/adding an entry?
Simply do not hit the submit button. At any time while performing these functions, you may move on to another page. Unless you press the submit button, nothing will take effect. If you do leave the page while adding or editing an entry, you will lose all the information that you changed or entered into the form.

Error Messages

NO ENTRY WAS MADE IN THE DATABASE. Contact the administrators to correct this error.

If this is the only error message you received, your entry now has a file created for it, but it was not listed in the database. This means that you may link to the story and people may access it, but it will not appear in any search results for the archives. To correct this error, contact the administrators and let them know the title of your entry (and chapter number, if applicable). If possible also, copy the error message when contacting the administrators.
If you got any other error messages, please follow the guidelines for dealing with those as well.
